help someone on their worst day.”

Kevin Spence

Lieutenant
2019-Present

Station 1: Jackson

Where are you from and how did you make it to Jackson? I’m originally from Kentucky and I came here for a summer and never left…in the typical Jackson way.

What do you do for work? I am the sales manager at Ridgeline Log and Timber.

What do you do in your free time? Oh, typical outdoor stuff…but I love spending time with my son and wife.

How long have you been a part of JH Fire/EMS? I have been with the department since 2019.

What made you want to join initially? What drew you in? Being able to help someone on their worst day…An old member of JH Fire EMS and a roommate of mine at the time encouraged me to apply. He said it was the ‘best job you’ll ever have.’ He wasn’t wrong.

What is your role in the department? Lieutenant out of Station 1.

What are your current certs? EMR and Firefighter 2.

What are your future goals in the department? I want to make it another 5 years and to help our volunteers realize their full potential.

What is your favorite part of volunteering? My favorite part would be helping people and making a difference. Also, being in the big red trucks is pretty badass.

What about the most challenging aspect? The people, interestingly enough.

What advice would you give new recruits?  It’s a marathon not a sprint. Listen more than you speak, be a sponge, and strap in!

What is the most valuable trait for someone to have in this line of work?  Be teachable and learn from every incident you go on.

Who is your mentor/who do you look up to? The firefighters and first responders who came before us.
